Going back to school!!

As part of the Graduate Scheme, we had been given the task to revamp some of the outdoor play areas at Ysgol Coed Y Gof, a Welsh Language school in Cardiff, South Wales. The school had suffered from vandalism and multiple break-ins, and we wanted to give the children a fun and safe environment to play as well as a brand new mindfulness garden!

The week of the community project had arrived, and it came round much quicker than expected! Months of planning and organising had all come down to this, and the work ahead seemed to be huge!

Day 1
All of the graduates arrived at the school bright and early on Day 1 and raring to go! Many of the donations that graduates had sourced from all over the country began arriving, as well as extra pairs of hands from apprentices, volunteers from Accenture, landscapers, and ground workers! Everybody got their hands stuck in and across the first day we managed to clear the area for the mindfulness garden, put up the fence to the back area, and take up the old matting at the front of the school!

Day 2
The day arrived and we had visitors in the form of Welsh TV Channel S4C to see what work we were doing to help improve the school! We managed to jet wash some of the back areas, dig out the front areas in preparation for the AstroTurf (including a very stubborn tree!), dig out the path for the mindfulness garden, and begin painting some of the school walls and log stools!

Day 3
The third day came and we could already see what progress was being made to the school, we managed to paint the fencing at the front of the school, jet wash and paint more of the areas around the school, fit the shed and fence to the mindfulness area, lay planting at the front of the school, and prepare for the AstroTurf to be laid.

Day 4
The final day of the community project had arrived and the end was nearly in sight! The day consisted of laying matting, mulch and plants in the mindfulness area, laying AstroTurf at the front of the school, finishing painting the school walls & playhouses, as well as building some benches for the back of the school. After a big tidy up of all the different areas, the job was complete, and we could see the massive transformation we had achieved. The children will truly benefit from these changes and we hope it will be enjoyed for years to come!

From all of the Graduates at Redrow, we’d like to say a huge thank you to the subcontractors, suppliers and volunteers that donated, sacrificed their time, and worked hard to help make a massive difference to the outdoor areas at Ysgol Coed Y Gof! These include:
